Pre-conception
Q. What basic health advice could you give couples planning to start a family?. Diet.
Ensure you are eating a healthy balance of fresh fruit, vegetables, carbohydrates and proteins. Try to cut down on fast foods and processed foods.
. Vitamins and minerals.
Consider a supplement of folic acid as this may reduce the risk of your baby having a neural tube defect such as spina bifida. Folic acid should be continued during pregnancy up to twelve weeks gestation.
. Rubella immunity.
You may have had this vaccination at school when you were a teenager. Your doctor can check your immunity by doing a blood test. If your levels are low you can be offered the vaccine. Contracting Rubella in early pregnancy may cause fetal abnormalities so consider having the vaccination prior to conception if necessary.
. Exercise.
If you are currently exercising then continue as before. There is no need to embark on a new exercise regime, but gentle regular exercise will keep you fit and healthy.
. Smoking.
If you are smoking, the best thing you can do for yourself and your planned baby is to give up completely. This can be difficult, but there are numerous support services to help you.
. Alcohol.
Try to abstain from alcohol completely whilst preparing for pregnancy.
. Stress.
High levels of stress can be linked to infertility, so you may need to look at ways of reducing stress in your life.
