This condition only happens in pregnancy or soon after the baby is born. The signs of pre-eclampsia do not appear until after 20 weeks and are a high blood pressure, protein in your urine and swelling. This is a serious condition that can affect both the mother and baby, and is the reason why the midwife or doctor will always check your blood pressure and ask for a sample of urine at every antenatal appointment.
