Why are pelvic floor exercises important?Women should perform pelvic floor exercises at all stages of their lives but they are particularly important during pregnancy and after the birth of the baby. The exercise involves squeezing the buttocks together and pulling in the stomach muscles. The best way is pretending that you are desperate to pass urine or you are stopping yourself from passing wind. This should be done several times a day, holding the muscles for 5 seconds and releasing.
This exercise will help to strengthen your pelvic floor, and reduces the risk of stress incontinence (leaking urine when you cough or sneeze).
