Pregnancy

Q. Is it safe to exercise during pregnancy? Q. What foods should I avoid in pregnancy? Q. Why is smoking harmful during pregnancy? Q. Are supplements such as evening primrose oil safe in pregnancy? Q. Is swelling normal?

Swelling commonly occurs in the hands and feet during pregnancy, and approximately half of all pregnant women experience this. How much swelling occurs will depend on a number of factors such as your weight, the length of time you stand throughout the day and how much fluid you take in. Ensure you drink plenty as this will help your body retain less. Take some gentle exercise, avoid salty foods and elevate your legs when you relax. If the swelling is not associated with other symptoms such as protein in your urine or high blood pressure it will not affect the pregnancy or the well being of the baby.
