Q. Why do newborns need a vitamin k injection?

Vitamin k is offered to all newborn babies. It helps the blood to clot, but because the body does not store vitamin k babies do not have enough at birth. Babies can develop vitamin k deficiency bleeding (VKDB) which although rare (1:10,000 births) can be extremely dangerous. Vitamin k can be given by injection or orally.
