There are a number of steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of cot death.
. Stop smoking - fathers too.
. Do not let anyone smoke in the same room as your baby.
. Put your baby on its back to sleep.
. Do not let your baby get too hot.
. Keep the baby's head uncovered. place the baby with its feet to the foot of the cot to prevent wriggling down under the covers
. If the baby is unwell seek medical advise promptly
. It is safest for the baby to sleep in a cot in your bedroom for the first 6 months
. It is dangerous to share your bed with the baby if you or your partner:
-are smokers (no matter where or when you smoke)
-have been drinking alcohol
-take drugs or medication that makes you drowsy
-feel very tired.
